Obituary
Vernon Amos Mast, 85 a resident of Hillsboro, NM, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at his home.
Dr. Mast was born on February 25, 1938 in Coatesville, PA and was a son of the late Alvin Isaac and Edna Mast. Vernon was an avid golfer, gardener, sports enthusiast and reader. He attended Park View Mennonite Church and sang in the choir. After graduating with a Master’s degree from University of Penn he taught biology and chemistry at Blue Ridge Community College and then with a PhD in civil engineering from The Ohio State University he became an Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Oklahoma State University for 20 years and retired to the Shenandoah Valley on a small farm in Broadway to be near his family. He and his wife Karen raised prize llamas in Oklahoma and Virginia. After spending 20 years in the valley, they moved to Hillsboro, New Mexico where they lived for the last two years. On June 20, 1982, he married Karen Miller Mast who survives. Also surviving is his first wife Christine C. Mast Hill of Dayton, VA., his children, Vicki A. Nolt and husband Wesley of Harrisonburg, Roger E. Mast and wife Cheryl of Harrisonburg, V. Andre Mast and wife Gloria of Broadway; daughter-in-law Lynette Mast of Harrisonburg; siblings, Anna Bishop of Harrisonburg, Dale Mast and wife Kathy of Richmond, Larry Mast of Leola, PA; grandchildren, Danielle Rhodes (Joel), Briana Shenk (Brian), Julia Nolt, Mark Mast (Rachel), Grayson Mast (Rachel), Reuben Mast, Hannah Mast, Michaela Mast, Sylvia Mast, Isaac Mast; great-grandchildren, Brooks Rhodes, Jacob Rhodes, James Shenk, Miriam Shenk, Macy Mast; and sisters-in-laws, Kathy Miller Weaver (Kenneth), and Kristin Miller Boren. In addition to his parents, Dr. Mast was preceded in death by a son, Christopher R. Mast; sister, Verda M. Geib and husband Homer; brother-in-law, James Bishop, and sister-in-law Candi Mast. |
