Obituary

Donald Kreider Burkhart, 92, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Mumaw House of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.
Mr. Burkhart was born on November 15, 1931, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was a son of the late Raymond and Ruth Kreider Burkhart.

He was raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and as a young man he worked as a volunteer through the Mennonite Voluntary Service where he met his future wife, Carol.  A large portion of his life was spent as a wholesale florist, running the family greenhouses, growing carnations, geraniums and other flowering plants.  He was also an accomplished Volkswagen mechanic working on older model VW bugs.  After his retirement, Donald and his wife, Carol, moved to Harrisonburg from Lancaster to be closer to their grandchildren.  Here he worked for Park View Mennonite Church and enjoyed volunteering his time at VMRC.

Donald was also an avid bicyclist and was known to bike 100 miles a week in the countryside and around town. He continued cycling until the impressive age of 90.  Throughout his entire life, his faith was extremely important to him, and you could witness this through his kindness to everyone he met. Don was a gentle soul, and he will be deeply missed by his friends and family.

On August 7, 1955, he married Carol Darlene Gaeddert Burkhart, who preceded him in death on January 28, 2023.

Donald is survived by two daughters, Ann Burkhart of Sacramento, CA and Elizabeth Benbow of Staunton, VA; two grandsons, Jameson Benbow and Liam Benbow, both of San Diego, CA.

In addition to his parents and wife of 67 years, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Burkhart; brother, Jay Burkhart and sister, Dorothy Sweigart.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Park View Mennonite Church with Pastors Phil Kniss and Paula Stoltzfus officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall at Park View Mennonite Church until 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be provided.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Mennonite Central Committee at https://donate.mcc.org/
