Obituary

June Darlene (Bontrager) Schrock, 87, died peacefully in her home at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, VA on March 14, 2026, after a brief and sudden decline.

June was born in Buffalo, New York, on May 5, 1938, to Eli and Sarah (Roth) Bontrager. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School in 1957 and married Paul M. Schrock on September 7, 1957, who preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by infant son, Douglas Paul, who died in 1968 of Rh incompatibility. June subsequently became the first donor in Pennsylvania to donate blood for RhoGam injection therapy, which became a standard part of prenatal care for at-risk pregnancies, saving thousands of lives.

June and Paul raised their family in Scottdale, PA where they lived for 40 years and were members of Kingview Mennonite Church. June had a gift for creating beauty in the spaces. Whether decorating her home, hosting family gatherings, or welcoming guests to the bed-and-breakfast, Inn The Woods, that she operated with Paul for five years, she delighted in making others feel comfortable and cared for.

In 1979, June earned a degree from Westmoreland Community College and became a registered nurse. At Frick Community Hospital, she worked in labor and delivery, as an OB floor nurse, and in the operating room. She later served as a field nurse for the Pennsylvania State Health Department.

After moving to Harrisonburg in 2003, June worked at the Family Birthplace at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and later in an oral surgeon’s practice. She and Paul were members of Park View Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg and enjoyed involvement in several small groups.

June loved a competitive game of Scrabble, Rook, or Bridge, growing and arranging flowers, interior decorating, collecting antiques, cake decorating, embroidery work, and brisk walks. In earlier years, she was a gifted seamstress; she and Paul were part owners/operators of the Scottdale Fabric Shop in the 1970s.

June loved attending her grandchildren’s music programs and sporting events. She also enjoyed the companionship of pets, especially her Yorkshire terrier, Bailey, whose presence was a comfort after Paul’s death.

In addition to her husband and son, June was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Bontrager; her sister-in-law, Elaine Bontrager; and her brothers-in-law, Glenn Millslagle and David Yoder.

June is survived by her children: Carmen (Luke) Schrock-Hurst of Harrisonburg; Brent (Lori) Schrock of Lititz, Pa.; and Andrea (Delbert) Wenger of Broadway, Va.; grandchildren Grace (Yugo) Prasetyo of Jakarta, Indonesia; Lucas Schrock-Hurst of Harrisonburg; Caleb (Stephanie) Schrock-Hurst of Hualien, Taiwan; Eli Wenger of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Leah (Michael Djabarov) Wenger of Baltimore, Md.; and by her great-grandsons, Jeremiah and Simeon Prasetyo.
She is also survived by sisters Lucille Yoder of Hartville, Ohio; Charlotte Bontrager of Williamsville, New York; her beloved identical twin, Joyce Millslagle of Scottdale, Pa.; Candace (Donald) Frey of Akron, NY; and Bonnie Norris of Harrisburg, Pa.; 14 Bontrager and 54 Schrock nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of VMRC, especially the caregivers on Crestwood Maple and First Choice Hospice. Donations in June’s honor may be made to Friendly City Florals or VMRC Foundation.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at Park View Mennonite Church, and will also be live-streamed. The family will receive friends following the service.

A private family interment will be held at a later date in Scottdale.
